Chapter 17.

Ashryn was sitting at the small desk, creating a few more runes for the crossbow bolts he’d brought with him. Having been in Sanctuary for nearly four weeks now, far longer than he’d hoped, the thought of getting back to Ilimel pulled more and more on his mind each day. While there were people in Sanctuary that made his stay much better than it probably would have been, he missed his other friends. Moreover, being away from the settlement he was supposedly building for so long meant he had missed much of what was happening. Surely, the Lodge would be up and operational by now, and other projects would no doubt be underway. Perhaps the first houses they’d been working on would be ready and occupied.

Etching another rune onto the shaft of another crossbow bolt, Ashryn let out a loud sigh. He was just about to put it in the small pile with the rest of them when something unexpected happened. Although only brief, the System was giving him some form of notification. However, as Sanctuary appeared out of the range and scope of whatever operated the System, he didn’t have a chance to see what the message said. Thankfully, from his previous experiences, he now knew that moving closer to the mountain range and away from the coast gave him a better chance of connecting to the System. While this was not much better, and his personal stats and information could be displayed, it was still a bit hit-and-miss as to how long it worked.

With a new lease of life and a spring in his step, Ashryn forced his seat back, scraping the legs across the floor and almost sending the simple wooden chair toppling over.

“Everything okay, Ash?” Rica asked.

“I need to get closer to the mountains,” Ashryn said, not explaining anything more and heading for the door.

"Do we need to bring anything?"

Ashryn afforded a smile. While he’d never asked Rica to help him or even visit after their first day spent together, the Elvar lad was a constant in the time he’d spent so far in Sanctuary. Moreover, he was also one of the ones he wanted to get linked to the System and somebody he now considered a good friend.

“No, just need to get the System to work properly,” Ashryn replied, turning his head briefly as he reached the door to check if Rica was coming too.

Although Rica was not yet able to receive a token to get a link to the System, the lad seemed keen to talk about it and learn about the various different Callings he could receive, in addition to those newer ones they were still discovering when other races were linked. As a result, and although not yet old enough, Rica had already agreed to travel with Ashryn when he returned to Ilimel, whenever that may be. The lack of news coming from there was a little worrying, and the airship had not been since dropping a message and a few more supplies a few weeks ago.
